Senior journalist Nakkheeran Gopal was arrested at the Chennai airport this morning for an allegedly defamatory article on Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit.
Mr Gopal, the editor of a popular Tamil weekly ‘Nakkheeran’, was arrested following a complaint filed by Raj Bhavan. He was on his way to Pune when he was arrested.
The article was on Nirmala Devi, a professor of a private Tamil Nadu college who was arrested in the infamous “sex-for-marks” scam. Nirmala Devi allegedly prodded girls to extend sexual favours to university officials in return for marks.
The article, published in the latest issue of the magazine, claimed that Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit was not probed in the case.
Chennai police officials said the article was offensive and defamatory.
